The LIAR'S DIARY Blog Day

Two friends of mine, Karen Dionne of Backspace and Susan Henderson of LitPark, have assembled a web-wide group of 300 writers to blog about Patry Francis and her book, The Liar's Diary, today. I'm proud to be a part of it—although, frankly, I wish it weren't necessary.

Patry, you see, has been diagnosed with cancer and will be unable to promote the release of her book in paperback. Instead of preparing to be out there on the road or in bookstores or otherwise connecting with readers face to face, she's been limited to telling her own story—without stint or sentimentality—over at her own blog, Simply Wait.

Please check it out— the blog and the book—today. And keep a kind thought for Patry, while you're at it.

Notable

The American Library Association has released their list of Notable Books for 2008, and I'm way beyond delighted to report that Finn is on it.

To be singled out for endorsement by America's libraries is about as thrilling a bit of acceptance as any writer can imagine. And I'm in good company, too: Also on the list are Amy Bloom's Away, Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union, and Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach, among other wonderful works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Be sure to check out the full list for yourself.

On another note: Finn arrives in paperback on March 11, my tour starts on March 24, and the Finn Book Club Menu Contest closes on February 25. Details on the whole works are at my web site.

Announcing the Finn Book Club Menu Contest

Win a visit from me to your book club, and copies of Finn: A Novel for your high school.

If there's one thing that book clubs like better than reading, it's eating. Which is why I've dreamed up the Finn Book Club Menu Contest.

Here's how it works.

Design a menu for your book club to enjoy on the night you discuss Finn. Use your imagination. Use your frying pan. Use catfish and whiskey and fatback bacon and cornbread and sunfish and baking powder biscuits and...well, you get the idea. Be inspired. Have fun. And make sure that you don't forget the huckleberries.

Describe your menu in as much detail as you like, and send it in the body of an e-mail FinnContest@gmail.com. No attachments, please. Be sure to include your full name, street address, and daytime phone number.

All entries must arrive by February 15, 2008. The winning entry, as judged by yours truly, will receive a visit from me at a book club meeting to be held at the my convenience in March or April, 2008, along with a classroom set of Finn in Random House trade paperback for presentation to your local high school. Runners-up will get a visit via telephone, plus a classroom set. Winners will be announced on my web site and contacted via e-mail on or around March 1, 2008.

OK. Get cooking! And watch for the trade paperback of Finn in your local bookstore, coming March 11...
